Fire Extinguisher & Alarm GIVE AWAY for DIY Spaces
December 17, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 pm
On Saturday, December 17th from 9 am to 11 am at 2600 Magnolia Street in Oakland, a group of artists will be distributing free fire extinguishers and smoke detectors. Any person who lives or works in a warehouse or DIY space that is in need of extinguishers to make their space safe is encouraged to attend.
In light of the Ghost Ship fire, the DIY community has experienced increased awareness as well as intense scrutiny around issues of safety. In response, we have and will continue to rise to the occasion, keeping our communities safe and preserving our function as artists and underground community builders.
Many of these warehouse spaces not only foster the arts, but provide a safe haven for marginalized communities to congregate and thrive. We hope that by taking steps towards making them safer, pathways to making them legal will become more accessible, therefore protecting a unique culture that contributes to making Oakland extraordinary.
